“To hand a pumpkin” is a Ukrainian traditional way to reject a matchmaking proposal. Representatives of a groom can advertise their client as much as they wish in front of a desired bride, but she may just hand them a pumpkin to refuse without explanation. Hence this expression also means “to get nothing for one’s pain”.

Глиняные игрушки и мелкую посудку традиционно и преимущественно делали жены и дети гончаров. Так дети к ремеслу приобщались. Часто гончары давали такую лепную мелочь на сдачу при покупке горшков или макитр. Говорят, гончарные семьи за сезон несколько телег игрушек наделывали.
