“To hand a pumpkin” is a Ukrainian traditional way to reject a matchmaking proposal. Representatives of a groom can advertise their client as much as they wish in front of a desired bride, but she may just hand them a pumpkin to refuse without explanation. Hence this expression also means “to get nothing for one’s pain”.

There used to be a custom in Ukraine to give a pumpkin pie in case of a refusal to a man who asked in marriage. That’s why lucky men would get loving wives for autumn and smart ones-a few tonnes of wonderful vegetables.
